It has been a very prosperous new year todate on the underage scene with some very high profile games and great wins.
The U.12’s took on Manorhamilton Rangers in the Connaught Cup at Sligo Rovers astroturf facilities and they were stunningly excellent against a very good outfit. United were worthy 3-0 winners and they will be looking forward to the next round brimming with confidence.
The U.14s had two huge games under their belt. Firstly, they took on a strong Knocknacarra outfit and gave a quality performance to beat a very good team 3-0. This was followed up in the Skechers SFAI Regional Semi Final where they took on the mighty Kiltimagh/Knock United in a finely balance and delicately poised match between two classic sides. It was truly nip and tuck all the ways with United winning 1-0.
The underage result of the weekend undoubtedly goes to the U.14 Girls as they made history in Killaloe by reaching the quarter final of the WFAI Girls U.14 Cup. The big scoreline didn’t reflect on the qualities of Lough Derg FC, who were excellent throughout but it firmly underpinned the strengths, making them one of the best sides in the country. The girls are rewarded with a home quarter final tie at home to Evergreen from Kilkenny, provisionally fixed for the 2nd February and this will be an opportunity to see the future of girls football in action.
The U.18s took on Ballyvary Blue Bombers in the Connaught U.18 Shield with the strongest available squad they had for some time and they were in great form as they displayed some quality football to easily advance against their opponents who never gave up in terms of commitment and desire but Westport just had too much quality for the Central Mayo team.
